The book "Russian-Turkish Relations: history, current State and Prospects" was published (Moscow, Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 2003, 301 p.). The work was prepared on the basis of reports delivered at the Moscow international conference organized by the Institute of Asian and African Countries at the Moscow State University named after M. Vlomonosov, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Istanbul Bilgi University.
The collection consists of two parts. The first section includes articles devoted to the problems of the more than 500-year history of Russian-Turkish relations, as well as issues of the Black Sea Straits.
The second part of the collection includes articles that thoroughly review Russian-Turkish trade and economic relations in the period after the collapse of the USSR and in the light of the changes that took place in the world in the last decade of the XX century, as well as make forecasts about the future of bilateral relations. The collapse of the Soviet Union and the emergence of new states in Central Asia and Transcaucasia led to the emergence of new factors in the development of Russian-Turkish relations in the economic and political spheres. Energy trade, the problems of oil and gas delivery to Western markets, the situation in the Caspian Sea region, as well as the increased popularity of Eurasian concepts, the emergence of private and public Russian-Turkish organizations create, in the opinion of many authors of the collection, a vast field for both countries to compete, as well as for their partnership and cooperation.
The future development of relations between Russia and Turkey, scientists emphasize, will be influenced by such factors as the state of the international situation, the impact on bilateral relations, first of all, of two forces - the European Union and the United States (scientists of both countries state that, unfortunately, Russian-Turkish relations are still to some extent "tied")."to the relations of each of the parties with the states of the West and are derived from the latter), the regional policy of the two states, the degree of stability of their internal economic situation, etc. There are many contradictions between the two countries, but today there are effective ways to overcome them. Almost all researchers agree on one thing: relations between Russia and Turkey can and should be built on the positions of mutual solidarity, rational cooperation that meets the long-term national interests of Russia, Turkey, and their closest neighbors.
On the pages of the book, Russian and Turkish researchers also reflect on the significance of interaction and mutual influence between Russia and Turkey in the state, military, and cultural spheres, as well as on the common historical destinies of the two states. The article by the well-known Turkish historian I. Ortayla leads the reader to the conclusion that it is necessary to take a closer look at the relations between our countries once again and try to correctly assess the accumulated experience of bilateral contacts, which is the foundation on which mutually beneficial relations between Russia and Turkey will be built in the XXI century.
