The compilation of bibliographic indexes has always been a special direction in Oriental studies. At the first stage of the development of domestic Mongolian studies in the country, in the absence of scientific literature, scientists focused on compiling catalogs of Mongolian manuscripts and woodcuts, which were fundamental materials for conducting scientific work. These were the first steps on the way to systematization of subsequent scientific works of Russian and foreign Mongolian studies. Cataloging of manuscripts and woodcuts was carried out by O. M. Kovalevsky, B. Ya. Vladimirtsov, A. D. Rudnev, K. F. Golstunsky, the lists of collected folklore were compiled by Ts. Zhamtsarano.

With the accumulation of scientific publications, editions of manuscripts, the first bibliographies of B. Ya. Vladimirtsov appear [Vladimirtsov, 1912; Vladimirtsov, 1918; Vladimirtsov, 1921], O. M. Kovalevsky [Kovalevsky, 1824; Kovalevsky, 1842], A.D. Rudnev [Rudnev, 1913-1914], B. E. Petri [Petri, 1913], A. N. Samoilovich [Samoilovich, 1912], B. Laufer [Laufer, 1927]. Later, in the 1930s, by N. P. Shastina [Shastina, 1933; Shastina, 1935a; Shastina, 1935b] and V. A. Kazakevich [Kazakevich, 1926].

In the mid-20th century, Russian scientists also paid great attention to this area of scientific work. Serious bibliographic work was carried out in Moscow, Leningrad, and Ulan-Ude. Reference indexes of literature and bibliographies on various aspects of studying Mongolia (natural science, physical geography, biology, geology, balneology, history, literature, national economy, culture) were usually carried out by library teams. The Fundamental Library for Social Sciences of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Moscow published the bulletin "New Literature on Oriental Studies" in a rotaprint form from 1946 to 1952, and the bulletin "New Soviet and Foreign Literature on the Countries of the Foreign East" from 1952 to 1960, which were published first in 4 and then in 12 issues annually, where in the heading "MNR" provided information about Soviet and foreign literature on Mongolian studies.

A great contribution to the publication of indexes on various branches of Mongolian studies was made in the middle of the XX century. Institute of Social Sciences of the Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now IMBiT SB RAS) [Buryat-Mongolian ASSR, 1957; Semichov, 1958; Writers of Soviet Buryatia, 1959; New Books..., 1960]. Since the 1970s, Kalmyk colleagues have been actively working in this field [Bibliografiya po dzhangarovedeniyu, 1980; Bibliografiya po Kalmyk Linguistics, 1984; Alekseeva and Sharapova, 1981]. To date, collections of bibliographies on various aspects of studying the country have appeared in Mongolia [Bibliography of Works on Mongolia, 1986].

Bibliographic work has not stopped in recent decades: indexes were published both on the work of individual personalities and on various areas of Mongolian studies. The most complete reference book was the bibliography compiled by the staff of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences L. P. Popova, Z. V. Shevernina, and K. N. Yatskovskaya [Bibliography on Soviet Mongolian Studies, 1987], which included publications of works by Soviet authors on various branches of Mongolian studies published in the first half of the 1980s, including not only monographic studies and collections, but also materials and abstracts of conferences, abstracts of candidate and doctoral theses, reviews, articles on history, economics, ethnography, archeology, linguistics, and literary studies.

The value of E. V. Boikova's work for the entire Mongolian scientific community and Russian science is especially great. At present, in the context of the weakening of relations between scientific centers of Russia, Mongolia, and the countries of the former USSR, the need for publications that perform a scientific and communicative function has increased. This work contributes to the establishment of information exchange and correlation of the directions of world Mongolian studies.

The task of maximizing the coverage of scientific literature published over the past almost 50 years is possible only for a professional Mongolian scholar, who is oriented in the modern scientific life of his own country and abroad, and reacts to all the events of the scientific Mongolian society.-

a society that has not only access to reference literature and scientific publications presented in major Russian libraries in various areas of Mongolian studies, but also direct contacts with its colleagues in Mongolian studies. This allows the author to correctly annotate works and include them in the appropriate category that corresponds to the main content of the publication, which is an important point in the thematic compilation of bibliographies. This is the ideology of all bibliographies by E. V. Voikova. Her first extensive experience in this area was the bibliographies of works on Russian Mongolian studies for 1987-1991 and 1992-1997 [Bibliografiya..., 1992; Boikova, 1997], which contain 1,740 and 1,225 titles of publications, respectively. In 2002, within the framework of the project of the International Association of Mongolian Studies, her new work was published, which expanded the boundaries of the included literature [Boikova, 2002]. Thus, the present work is a revised and expanded edition of the previous bibliographies published by the author.

The bibliography of E. V. Boikova is a systematic thematic index of works on Mongolian studies from 1946 to 2000, which reflects the publications of this period, including publications that were not included in previous bibliographies. The index contains works of Russian scientists and specialists in various fields of Mongolian studies, including articles in scientific and periodicals both in Russia and abroad. This list includes works by professionals-orientalists, practitioners, as well as specialists working in related fields of Oriental studies, which deal with Mongol studies. The bibliography is absolutely logical to include publications written by authors who lived in the Soviet republics before the collapse of the USSR (1991). Special importance is attached to the bibliography by the fact that in addition to well-known works recorded in other reference indexes, it includes publications scattered in small-circulation collections, sometimes absent in central libraries. And there are more and more such publications in recent years.

In the preface to the work, E. V. Boikova briefly describes the history of Mongolian studies in Russia, the main stages of the formation, functioning and current state of the national Mongolian science. The author rightly calls his work the first "bibliographic collection in the post-war years, which contains works on scientific Mongolian studies for more than fifty years" (p.9).

The structure of the bibliography is subject to the thematic division of the material, which is divided into 16 sections: I. "General works"; II. "Linguistics"; III. "Literary Studies"; IV. "Archeology of Mongolia and adjacent territories"; V. "History"; VI. "Religion"; VII. "Physical and ethnic anthropology. Paleoanthropology. Craniology"; VIII. "Ethnology"; IX. "Economy"; X. "Culture and art of the Mongolian-speaking peoples"; XI. "Education. Libraries"; XII. "Science"; XIII. "Print. Publishing business"; XIV. "Radio. Television. Internet"; XV. "Healthcare. Medicine"; XVI. "Physical education and sports". Each section has several subsections. For example, the section "History" has subsections: "Source studies", "Historiography", "Publications of historical monuments"," Collections of documents"," General works"," Ancient History"," History of the Middle Ages"," Modern History"," Modern History","State System". In total, the book has 62 subsections, of which 8 are simultaneously sections, since they consist of one subsection. In turn, some subsections are divided into chapters. So, the "New History" subsection has chapters: "The Dzungarian Khanate (XVII-mid-XVIII c.) ", "Mongolia as part of the Qing Empire", " Mongolia in the second half of the XVII-first half of the XVIII century)", " Mongolia in the second half of the XIX-early XX centuries)". A total of 85 chapters. The material within each chapter is arranged in alphabetical order. At the beginning of the book there is a list of abbreviations, at the end-an alphabetical index of authors, compilers, editors, translators (more than 1200 names). Each category is organized according to a single principle. The sequence of publication placement is as follows: monographs, collections, articles. A total of 8804 publications are reflected in the bibliography. So far, Russian Mongolian studies have not known such a large amount of literature presented in the bibliography.

I would like to draw the attention of the author and the reader to some of my own considerations regarding this work.

When distributing material by topic, there is always a danger of placing the work in a category that does not correspond to the work. And in this bibliography, there are cases in which it seems more legitimate to find some publications in other chapters. So, in the presence of the chapter "Archival materials", it seems that the work of Kuzmin Yu. V. and Svinin V. V. " Mon-

the Golsky diaries of V. A. Kazakevich", published in the collection "Siberian Archive" (p. 18), should be placed in it, and not in the chapter "Russian/Soviet Mongolian Studies". The concordance of titles of publications entitled to dual locality, which has been made in later reprints of this bibliography, can also be of great help. In this case, you should print the full output of the work in the main place, but you can only put an ordinal number in other categories where this work is also allowed to be located.

Since the reviewed work is intended not only for those who speak the Mongolian language, but also for specialists working in areas related to Mongolian studies, it is advisable to provide a Russian translation of the Mongolian titles of collections and journals. It is advisable to put the translation in parentheses after the title. For example: "Mongol ertniy TYYX soelyn zarim asuudal" ("Questions of the ancient history and culture of Mongolia"), "BNMAU-yn Socialist system zasgiin TYYX" ("History of the Socialist Economy of the MNR"), "Olon Ulsyn mongol erdemtniy V ikh khural" ("V International Congress of Mongol Studies") (pp. 385, 618, 545). It is even more constructive to select the Mongolian titles of collections as a separate list and place the list at the beginning or end of the book.

In any bibliography, it is impossible to cover absolutely all publications published within the specified time frame. Thus, R. M. Valeev's monograph "Kazan Oriental Studies: History and Development (XIX century - 20s of XX century)" (Valeev, 1998), which is not included in the bibliography, should be included in the first chapter "Russian / Soviet Mongolian Studies" of the first subsection "Mongolian Studies", since it is directly related to the initial period of formation of Mongolian studies Its third chapter, "Studies of Mongolia, China, and South Asia: Philology and Country Studies," is entirely devoted to early 18th-century Mongolian studies.

The expressed wishes are of a private nature and do not in any way affect the high assessment of the work performed at a high professional level that is valuable and useful for domestic science. Its widespread use in Mongolian studies is unquestionable.
