On September 27, 2015, Irina Vasilyevna Borolina, an associate professor of the ISAA, an honored teacher of Moscow State University, a talented teacher and scientist, one of the leading Russian turkologists and literary critics, a folklorist, and a translator, who selflessly served Russian Oriental studies at Moscow State University for more than half a century and brought up several generations of specialists in general literature, passed away.

I. V. Borolina graduated from the Eastern Department of the Faculty of Philology of Moscow State University in 1948. In 1951, after defending her PhD thesis, she began teaching at the Department of Turkic Philology of this faculty. her research interests include Turkish literature and folklore.

I. V. Borolina made a significant contribution to Russian Turkology, continuing and developing the traditions of classical Turkic philology laid down by the outstanding scientist N. K. Dmitriev. She devoted her scientific activity to the study of Turkic literature and folklore, the study of the genesis of many folklore and literary genres, the laws of their development. I. V. Borolina had a significant influence on the formation of the foundations of Turkish literary studies and folklore studies in the form in which they currently exist.

I. V. Borodina is the author of more than 80 publications in academic and university publications in our country and abroad, covering a wide range of problems and highly appreciated by specialists. Among them are a monograph about the Uzbek writer A. Kakhkhar, sections in three volumes of the university textbook on the history of Oriental Literature, sections in the "History of World Literature" (volumes 3 and 7), published in IMLI, a series of articles on the principles of historical and literary typology, types of inter-literary contacts, periodization of Oriental literature, history of the Russian Language. Oriental studies in Russia, certain literary genres (primarily dramatic and "small prose") and personalities, a textbook on Turkish folklore, on Turkish Ashik creativity, etc.

Despite all the variety of subjects, the works of I. V. Borodina can be combined into the following voluminous blocks: the history of medieval and modern Turkish literature, the study of the laws of its development in the aspect of historical and literary typology; the genesis, evolution and interaction of genres of Turkish folklore; modern Uzbek literature (her PhD thesis is devoted to the work of A. Kakhkhar). In the circle of scientific interests of IV. Borodina included inter-literary contacts, traced primarily on the material of Russian and Turkic literature; the history of Russian Turkology in the person of its best representatives - V. A. Gordlevsky and N. K. Dmitriev; issues of the theory of literary translation, etc. Many of the problems of Turkish and Turkic literary studies and folklore considered by I. V. Borodina have become a new word in world Turkology.

A special place in the scientific research of I. V. Borodina was occupied by the study of Turkish folklore, identifying the specifics of its individual genres, their genesis and evolution, and studying the problems of interaction between folklore and literature. However, of all the genres of Turkish folklore, I. V. Borolina's main passion was Turkish entertainment culture. In this area, she considered the typology of folk drama, for the first time in world Turkology solved the problem of genre definition of performances performed in different types of folk theater, investigated the specifics of adaptation of works of the romanic epic in the traditional theater, traced the path of development of Turkish drama from folk drama to author's drama.

I. V. Borolina laid the foundations for a comprehensive study of the typological features of folk drama, and also outlined the main problems for further studying the interaction of folk drama with the poetics of the author's educational drama.

Turkish medieval, modern and modern literature is another extensive area of scientific research by I. V. Borolina. She (together with I. R. Sonina) owns a number of sections on the history of Turkish literature in a multi-volume work on the history of Oriental literature created by scientists of the Institute of Asian and African Countries: "Literature of the East in the Middle Ages" (in two parts, 1970), "Literature of the East in modern Times" (1975) and "Literature of the East in the Middle Ages" (1970). I. V. Borolina, together with other Turkologists, presented Turkish literature in the eight-volume book" History of World Literature "(1977). " (1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1994).

From a scientific and methodological point of view, I. V. Borolina's anthology on Turkish folklore (in Turkish) in two volumes (1984, 1987, 2007 2nd ed.), which is intended for students of Turkology, remains significant. It presents Turkish folklore in its main genres. Continuing her idea of creating a whole complex of educational and methodological materials for students, academically based due to the presence of prefaces, comments and explanations, I. V. Borolina together with E. A. Oganova published the anthology "Turkish Ashik Poetry" (Moscow, 2007).

I. V. Borolina not only contributed to the introduction of Turkish literature into the scientific use of Russian Turkology, but also worked hard to introduce the Russian reader to Turkish oral and poetic literature. She also translated the collection of Turkish folk songs Mani and Turku "Lament of the Fallow Deer" (1966), as well as the collection of poems by medieval Turkish poets "From old Turkish Poetry" (1978). She also acted as a translator of Turkish written and oral literature in the major collective work of scientists of the Institute of Asian and African Countries " Literature of the East in the Middle Ages. Texts" (1996).

Considering the problems of the development of Turkish literature from the perspective of historical and literary typology, I. V. Borolina focused on the types of literary relations, identifying the principles of building cultural contacts in the conditions of both ancient and medieval types of literary development.

Study of Turkish literature in the aspect of historical and literary typology, taking into account its national specifics and the mechanism of interaction with the literatures of the Arab-Persian culture-

On the one hand (in the Middle Ages), and with Western European literatures - on the other (primarily in the era of the Turkish Enlightenment), I. V. Borodina brought out a number of important problems and helped determine the nature of the literary process at various historical stages. The most significant conclusions of the scientist are related to the definition of the typology of medieval Turkish literature and modern literature, the promotion and confirmation of the concept of the Turkish Enlightenment; the establishment of types of inter-literary and intercultural contacts in the Middle Ages, modern and modern times. These problems were set and solved thanks to the deep knowledge and brilliant erudition of I. V. Borodina, involvement in research of a wide range of historical and cultural material, careful and painstaking work with a large body of texts of world literature and folklore. I. V. Borolina's identification of the mechanism of integration of Turkish literature into the world literary process at various historical stages anticipated many further directions in the development of modern literary studies.

The most significant scientific works of I. V. Borolina were included in the collection of her articles "Turkic Literatures and Folklore" (2004), the publication of which was timed to the 50th anniversary of the scientist's scientific and pedagogical activity.

Despite all the variety of topics and problems of I. V. Borolina's research, there is not a single random article in her scientific baggage: each of her works is a new word in Russian Turkology, which largely determines the logic of the development of modern Oriental literary studies. The works of I. V. Borolina are distinguished by a high research culture, careful fixation of the works of their predecessors, thoroughness in identifying their interpretations, and genuine art of commenting. All of I. V. Borolina's research is written at the highest level, which is determined by the depth of the problem statement, its theoretical framework, well-thought-out composition, comprehensive coverage of the problems covered, and their inclusion in a broad historical and cultural context.

During her professional career, I. V. Borodina gave lectures on the history of Turkic literatures, ancient Turkic-language monuments, the Uzbek language and Uzbek literature, Turkish folklore, medieval, modern and modern Turkish literature, problems of historical and literary typology, the theory of literary translation, etc. other universities - in St. Petersburg (Leningrad), Tashkent, Samarkand, Yerevan, Warsaw. She has made presentations at numerous national and international conferences and symposia in Moscow, Baku, Tbilisi, Tashkent, and Warsaw. I. V. Borodina constantly maintained close contacts with orientalists from St. Petersburg, Baku, Tbilisi, Kazan, Tashkent, and Samarkand Universities, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of World Literature of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientists from Turkey from Ankara University, Poland from Warsaw and Krakow Universities, Germany (University of Berlin), and Bulgaria (Sofia University). V. Borolina actively participated in the methodological work on the organization of relevant literary studies courses. In particular, she has always advocated the introduction of the course of folklore in the system of teaching the history of Oriental literature. I. V. Borolina herself set and throughout her teaching career taught a course on Turkish folklore at the Department of Turkic Philology of the ISAA of Moscow State University, which is currently preserved in the form developed by her.

I. V. Borolina, a talented teacher who had amazing human qualities, warmth of heart, and understanding, brought up ten graduate students who successfully defended their PhD theses. Irina Vasilyevna's scientific guidance was distinguished by the high quality of her work preparation; she knew the dissertation research of her graduate students almost by heart. According to the amount of work that Irina Vasilyevna has invested in each work of her students and postgraduates, we can safely say that it is equivalent to creating another dissertation.

All the numerous students of I. V. Borolina and the staff of the Department of Turkic Philology deeply experience this irreplaceable loss.
